CEO Welcome

Welcome

We are proud to be a supporter of the various activities and functions on University campuses and across our member network.

On Campus

In 2007/8 we will donate over $240,000 as follows:

  • $50,000 to support Orientation Week activities across all campuses
  • $50,000 in donations and sponsorships. These include donations to support prize giving at graduation, welcome packs for new staff, university clubs and events.
  • $50,000 in scholarships and bursaries. We work with the universities to distribute the scholarships based on various criteria, e.g. equity/ hardship, academic results.
  • $30,000 in advertising in student and university publications.
  • $30,000 in book launches and events. We support authors on campus through book launches and marketing of their books. We hold twice yearly sales which promote great savings in academic, reference, lifestyle and general books.
  • $30,000 in gift vouchers to support university clubs, functions, departmental prizes, competitions etc.

Literacy

We are proud to support AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) - AIME partners Indigenous High School students with university students in a one-on-one mentoring program with the objective to increase Year 10, Year 12 and university admission rates for all Indigenous Australian students who participate. Currently based at 5 locations, Sydney City (The University of Sydney), Western Sydney (The University of Sydney - Cumberland Campus), North West Sydney (Macquarie University), Wollongong (The University of Wollongong), North Coast (Southern Cross University - Coffs Harbour Campus), AIME has plans to expand to other universities nationally.

We participate in Indigenous Literacy Day each year. On one day in September booksellers across Australia donate 5% of their takings to support this initiative which is a partnership between the Indigenous Literacy Project (ILP) and The Fred Hollows Foundation. Visit www.worldwithoutbooks.org to find out more.

We also partner with The Smith Family Learning For Life program. This program allows students to further or continue their education by assisting with expenses and support.

Arts

We support the Artists Books project at Southern Cross University, which helps build their library collection of these unique books. Artists books are books created as a piece of art, produced by an artist either as a unique art object or as a limited edition. Entries are received from all over Australia, and showcase individual talent and creativity.

We also support StudentArt, a fully funded initiative of the University Co-op Bookshop. This is a national competition in which students submit artwork (fine arts, digital media and photography), which is then judged by a panel of lecturers from Art and Design Departments at different Universities. The winning ten entries are published onto greeting cards and sold through our stores. Visit stArt to find out more.

Other

Our staff engage in supporting a number of other charities, either by donating their time or with a financial contribution. In the last twelve months the charities supported have included Daffodil Day, Movember and Red Nose Day.
